Using FortiToken as a Factor for MFA

What is this?

This KB Article walks you through downloading, installing, and using FortiToken on a Windows Laptop or Desktop computer. You will use FortiToken if you do not have access to a mobile device for MFA.

Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA is a requirement here at NSCC. If you have questions about our MFA requirement, please see MFA Frequently Asked Questions.

Imagine your online accounts are like locked doors. To keep them secure, you need a key to unlock them. But with MFA, you need more than just a key to get in.  First, there's something you know, like your password. Think of this as knowing the combination to a lock. Next, there's something you have, like your phone or a special device or application that generates a secret code. This is like having a key in your hand. For those who do not have a mobile device like an iPhone or android, you download an application on your personal laptop that generates the second key to get into your account.

MFA makes it much harder for someone else to break in and access your information. MFA adds an extra layer of security to help protect your accounts from being hacked. Below you will find a detailed video that walks you through step by step how to set up FortiToken. Please turn on CC if you wish to access captions. We also have detailed step by step instructions with screengrabs under the video.

You will need to Download and Install FortiToken.

Go to the Microsoft Store on your laptop and search for FortiToken and download it.

Search for FortiToken in the Search bar in Microsoft Store

Once it is installed, Launch FortiClient by clicking Open.

Connecting FortiToken to your NSCC Account

Open your web browser. It is easiest if you push the FortiToken App to the right of your display, and your web broswer on the left. That is how the rest of the images in the KB were captured. A web browser is on the left, and FortiToken is on the right.

Go to the website aka.ms/mfasetup

Enter Your NSCC Credentials. This is your W#######@campus.nscc.ca

Click Next when finished.

Enter your NSCC Password. Click 'Sign in' when finished.

Complete MFA setup.

You will be prompted to set up more information to keep your account secure. Click Next

Since you are not using a mobile phone or installing Microsoft Authenticator. Click 'I want to use a different authenticator app'

Click Add in the FortiToken App (bottom right). And then click Next in your web browser (blue button)

In the web browser Click Can’t Scan Image.

This will now give you an account name and a secret key.

Copy and paste both pieces of information into FortiToken.

Make sure to change the Category in FortiToken to 3rd Party (as seen below).

Click Done in Fortitoken and click Next in the web browser.

Enter the 6 digit code generated by FortiToken where prompted in your web browser (as seen below), and click next.

It’s that easy. You are now connected (see below). Click done. and click Yes to stay signed in.

Using FortiToken

In the future, every time you are off-campus and you want to sign in, make sure to open FortiToken and have it ready.  You will be prompted to enter this code which changes every 30 seconds. This is what it will look like below. You must enter your code from FortiToken when prompted. Click Veritfy.
