What is this?

This article explains how to migrate data from a shared directory to Microsoft SharePoint.

Instructions

  1. Download link for SharePoint migration tool (SPMT):  Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool (sharepointonline.com)

Once the migration tool is installed its time to start your first migration

  1. In this case we'll be moving files from a file share, so you'll want to select " File Share" to copy content.

  1. Choose the location you're moving the files from.  You can either browse to the folder or copy and paste the path.

  1. You have the option of copying to a Team, a Sharepoint Site or Onedrive.  Here we'll be choosing SharePoint.

  1. Next you'll want to choose the SharePoint site to copy the data to.  By default the SPMT will try to create a site based on the name of the target folder. To choose another site, simply paste in the Site Address.  Then once you click in the white space below it, the document libraries available on that site will populate and you can choose your target library.  Documents is the default target library.

  1. You'll have one more chance to review your migration settings before any files are copied.

  1. Make sure only "Migrate file version history" is selected.

  1. Once the migration starts you'll have a progress bar to monitor.  It can take a while to migrate the files, please be patient.

  1. Success! The files have been migrated and you can start a new migration if necessary.
