JAMF - Preparing a Mac for "First Boot" and Out Of Box Setup and Deployment

Tags JAMF

To get a Mac setup with JAMF we need to make sure it's in an "Out Of Box" state so that it gets the profile from the server. The following will explain how to prepare the computer for "First Boot".

    1. Make sure the SN# is showing up in JAMF ** to then associate the computer to the PreStage Desktops or PreStage Laptops Groups.
** If the SN# does not show up in JAMF check with Apple School Manager that it's listed and pointing to JAMF. If not please contact the Core Service Apple Technician as we need to contact Apple to have it added.
    2. Your Computer needs to be "Out Of Box Ready". If ready continue to step (D).
      • If the device is not "Out Of Box Ready" you will need to Erase/Restore OS by using Recovery Mode. To enter Recovery Mode you need to first know if your Mac is an INTEL or Apple Silicon based computer.

        • INTEL
          1. Start the computer by holding "CMD+Option+R" to Startup from Recovery Mode
          2. Make sure the computer is off then press and hold your Mac’s power button for at least 10 seconds to turn it off, then let go.
          3. With your Mac computer turned off, press the Power button to turn it back on and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘)-R key combination on the internal keyboard.
          4. You can release the keys when you see an Apple logo or other image.

        • Apple Silicon
          1. Make sure the computer is off then press and hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options”.
          2. Click “Options”.
          3. Lastly, click “Continue” and enter the password for an administrator account, if requested.

      • Erase and reinstall macOS - If you erase and reinstall macOS, your user accounts, network settings, and all of the files and folders on your Mac are deleted. Before you erase macOS, attempt to log back into your system following the instructions below, then back up any files you want to keep by copying them to another disk or storage device. Also, write down your network settings from Network preferences to make it easier to get connected again after reinstalling macOS.
        1. Make sure you’re connected to the internet.
        2. In the Recovery app window, click Disk Utility, then click Continue.
        3. In the top menu select the "View" button and select "Show All Devices".
        4. Select your disk in the list on the left. It's the "container" under the physical drive that you want to select then click the Erase button.
        5. Enter a name for your disk, choose APFS from the Format pop-up menu, then click Erase.
        6. After the disk has been erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
        7. Select Reinstall macOS, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

    3. If it's a desktop or your laptop go ahead and boot the computer. If it's a laptop and the end-user is not present to authenticate you need to wait and have them log in for the first boot.
    4. Connect to Ethernet or Wifi
    5. When asked to accept the NSCC Profile select Continue
    6. If a laptop and in the associated PreStage Laptops Group you will be prompted to enter in your NSCC user credentials.

You've now set up your Mac with first boot deployment
