Software Center "Required software changes will be applied to your computer"

Instructions

This message may be displayed by Software Center when software that has been marked as 'required' is deployed to your computer. You can click on "More information" to display the title of the software being deployed. In most cases, these will be for necessary Windows Updates but occasionally they may be for applications being deployed by Digital Innovation and Technology technicians.

You may see this message if:

  • Your computer was powered off or disconnected from the NSCC on-site network during the nightly maintenance window (12AM until 5:30AM nightly)
  • Your computer is a laptop, which have all been set to allow Windows Updates to install at any time. This is because they are frequently taken home overnight or otherwise disconnected from the NSCC on-site network during the nightly maintenance window. It is important for updates to be installed regularly to protect NSCC property and data.
  • A severe vulnerability was discovered and it was deemed significant enough that a patch was deployed outside of the nightly maintenance window.

By selecting "Right now" and clicking OK, you will allow the update to install. The installation will be performed in the background and you will be able to continue working while it installs. It may prompt you to reboot the computer when the update has finished.

Optionally, you may check the box to allow Software Center to restart your computer automatically if needed once the update has finished installing. If you do not allow Software Center to automatically restart your computer, you should manually reboot it when possible. Be sure to save any work in progress before allowing the machine to reboot.
